New International Dictionary of Pentecostal and Charismatic Movements, The
Published in Hardcover by Zondervan (01 June, 2002)
Authors: Stanley M. Burgess, Eduard M. Van Der Maas, and Ed van der Maas
Average review score:

Great Reference
This is a great reference book containing a virtually endless source of information regarding terminology, people, events, doctrinal issues, organizations, etc. concerning the Pentecostal/Charismatic movements across the entire world. This book contains many charts, diagrams, pictures, maps, and statistics that would be very useful for those who are doing any sort of research. Whenever possible (which is very frequently) each topic that is presented contains further bibliographical information for further research.

My only complaint with the book is that sometimes some of the various contributors to any number of topics can often be uncritical, and are obviously just writing from a highly biased view point, with little regard to other view points from other charismatic/pentecostal circles are- and this can be deceptive. For example, on "Spiritual Warfare", the author of this topic is writing from what I would regard as a dangerous point of view, and consider it heretical. And the bibliographic references would only lead people to further error, disregarding more balanced, more scriptural views.

However, I have found my own complaint (so far) to be the exception, rather than the rule. Most of what I have read seems to present a balanced view of things...though there are so many things discussed in this book that it would be impossible to independently verify.

This is a must have book for anybody with remotely any interest in pentecostal/charismatic studies.

The New Majority: Toward a Popular Progressive Politics
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (November, 1997)
Authors: Stanley B. Greenberg and Theda Skocpol
Average review score:

A prescient collection of essays . . .
I first read this book in January, 1998. It's analysis of the political heart of the majority of U.S. voters has turned out to have been eerily prescient. The collection of essays presents an intriguing array of voices, each of whom writes simply, directly and persuasively. Some honest-to-goodness NEW ideas, well presented.

New Perspectives in Algebraic Combinatorics
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (01 August, 1999)
Authors: Louis J. Billera, Anders Bjorner, Curtis Greene, Rodica E. Simion, Richard P. Stanley, and Anders Bj^D"orner

A wonderful collection of research-expository surveys
This volume contains expository introductions to some of the most exciting research areas in algebraic combinatorics. Although most of the articles began life as a lecture at MSRI, the authors have done much more than publish transcripts of their talks; they have produced carefully written articles that contain much information that they could not present during the severe time constraints of the original combinatorics seminar. Anyone interested in entering one of the fields touched upon in this volume would be hard-pressed to find a better way to get started than to study the relevant article in this book.

Since the articles were written there have of course been advances; I will just mention that a number of Jim Propp's matchings problems have been solved, and that Mark Haiman has proved the n! conjecture.

Contents: Matroid bundles (L. Anderson); Combinatorial representation theory (H. Barcelo, A. Ram); An algorithmic theory of lattice points in polyhedra (A. Barvinok, J. E. Pommersheim); Some algebraic properties of the Schechtman-Varchenko bilinear forms (G. Denham, P. Hanlon); Combinatorial differential topology and geometry (R. Forman); Macdonald polynomials and geometry (M. Haiman); Enumeration of matchings: problems and progress (J. Propp); The generalized Baues problem (V. Reiner); Littlewoord-Richardson semigroups (A. Zelevinsky).

The New York Times Best Diagramless Crosswords
Published in Paperback by Times Books (January, 1996)
Authors: Eugene T. Maleska, New York Times, and Stanley Newman
Average review score:

These diagramless Crossword Puzzles are fun!
Like the first volume, this is excellent. Once a crossword puzzler gets the hang of diagramless puzzles, regular puzzles will seem ho-hum. A one page essay is included that nicely explains techniques and strategies for solving this type of puzzle.

Nine Hours to Rama
Published in Hardcover by Random House (June, 1962)
Author: Stanley Wolpert
Average review score:

A fine novelization of a tragic day
This is the 1962 novel upon which the film "Nine hours to Rama" was based. The "Nine Hours" are those leading up to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on January 30, 1948.

Unlike the movie, the book does not open with the assassination itself, but with the assassin, Natu Godse (a fictional name) boarding the train that will take him to the prayer meeting where, nine hours later, he will shoot the Mahatma and brings sorrow to the whole of India. From the beginning of the book, the reader already knows what the tragic outcome of the story will be. And yet, I found myself getting so caught up in the lives of the different characters, that I could hardly put the book down. It's really too bad this is now out of print, and I hope somebody does a reprint, because this is a really great novel!

No Parachute: A Fighter Pilot in World War I; Letters Written in 1917 by A. S. G. Lee.
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (January, 1970)
Author: Arthur Stanley Gould. Lee
Average review score:

A superb snapshot of the average fighter pilot's life in WWI
Arthur Lee's letters to his young wife from the western front in 1917 were more than just the lovelorn ramblings of a British officer. His goal of becoming an author prompted him to write long, detailed letters almost daily. His wife, Gwyneth Ann, carefully compiled the letters and saved them as a documentary of his military career. Over 50 years later, Lee dug them out, edited them as little as possible and published them as "No Parachute." The compilation represents the best and most accurate account of a pilot's daily routine on the western front that I've read in nearly 25 years of study. You won't put this book down until you've finished it; and when you do, you'll feel as if you knew each member of Lee's flight as well as he did. Lee's penchant for detail is so complete that I was actually able to travel to France and pinpoint within ten yards where he was shot down during the Battle of Messines Ridge, the route he walked on his way back to the lines and! ! the infantry battalion's position where he finally collapsed. You can go yet today to Izel le Hameau and see the grave of a fellow flier, killed in an accident, that Lee helped bury in the town cemetary. This is not the self-congratulatory chronicle of a famous fighter pilot written after the fact; it's the first hand contemporary account of a relatively unknown Sopwith Camel pilot who's only goal was to get home alive to his bride. The description of his first air to air kill leaves you breathless as he describes how his hands shook uncontrollably while aiming his machine gun. Lee reacts with horror when he witnesses a German pilot leap from a burning Albatros just yards away from the wings of his fighter. His accounts of an aviator's night life, romantic interludes and personal relationships within the squadron are equally captivating, all written with the viewpoint of a personal letter with no intent of publication.

If you only read one book on aviation in the First Worl! ! d War, make it "No Parachute." Lee's collective l! etters form a masterpiece and make you wonder why anyone bothers writing fiction. The images of combat that you get from this book will last a lifetime.

Normal Children Have Problems, Too: How Parents Can Understand and Help
Published in Paperback by Bantam Doubleday Dell Pub (Trd Pap) (November, 1995)
Authors: Stanley Turecki and Sarah Wernick
Average review score:

Step-by-step approach to analyzing problems and solving them
This book goes through the process psychologist Dr. Turecki would take if you brought your child to his office for counseling, using several case studies to illustrate his points (which are common areas of concern). He starts by helping you determine the actual problems your family is experiencing, and getting past everyone's emotional reactions. Turecki discusses common discipline problems and how parents may unknowingly contribute to them, and how parents can talk to each other (even when they disagree). Guidelines are given on how to choose which behaviors to start working on changing, and how to describe the problem objectively. One of the strengths of this book is you are then guided in thoroughly looking at your child's temperament and history to help you see the issues in his or her unique situation which will help you in finding solutions. Turecki does not pretend that one solution works for all children, since children have inborn temperaments which affect how they relate to the world. The author gives practical advice for specific behaviours and provides guidelines to knowing when to seek professional help, and how to work with teachers. As a teacher, child care worker, lay counselor and mother I found this book to be one of the best on the subject. If you enjoyed Kids Are Worth It, Raising Your Spirited Child, or How to Talk so Kids Will Listen, you will find this book a welcome addition to your library.
